School is a child's second home, a place where they spend many hours of their important developmental years. Research has shown that chronic exposure to low levels of chemical toxins commonly found in both indoor and outdoor school environments can cause acute and long-term health problems, thereby interfering with a child's ability to learn, socialize and participate in everyday school activities.

The ChildSafe School is a science-based, award-winning program created by Grassroots Environmental Education, a non-profit organization with a mission to educate the public about the links between common environmental exposures and human health, and to empower individuals to act as catalysts for change within their own communities.

The information contained on this website is intended to help you better understand the underlying facts about potentially harmful environmental exposures that are common to many of our nation's schools. We hope this knowledge and the materials of the ChildSafe School Program will motivate you to initiate simple steps towards making your child's school as healthy as possible…a truly ChildSafe school.
